Occlusal guards, often called night guards, are acrylic mouthpieces used to help protect your teeth. A large percentage of the population grind their teeth at night which often causes significant wear on the surfaces of your teeth, as well as your TMJ. If you've ever woken up in the morning and don't know why your jaw hurts, or maybe have an ongoing headache, you could very well be grinding without knowing it. This even includes those who are mouth breathers: If you clench your teeth for even five minutes in an given night, it adds up.
A night guard that is custom fitted by the doctors here at our practice is an appliance that will protect your teeth if grinding or clenching were to ever occur during your nights rest. It is especially important to use a night guard if you have any implants, crowns, veneers or root canals in your mouth. |
